Recently cassava production in the Lake Zone has been affected by cassava mosaic disease (CMD) which is spread by whiteflies. This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of intercropping cassava with legumes on cassava performance, fertility improvement and whitefly control in Misungwi district, Mwanza region, Tanzania. Cassava intercropping with green gram or cowpeas is recommended based on their abilities to improve soil fertility, reduce whitefly populations and CMD attack, and higher economic returns. Improved cassava varieties intercropped with legumes would be the most appropriate measure for sustainable cassava production.
