In 1995, within the fourth drainage system precinct Siculeni-Tusnad (near Miercurea Ciuc) from the arrangement Regulation, Embankment and Drainage of Higher Olt Basin Area from the Racu - Ciuc - Tusnad Depression, Harghita County, a few areas of peat land self-ignited in different locations, summing about 3 acres. Due to toxic smoke pollution, which contained quantities of emissions that exceeded the admitted limits of Miercurea Ciuc county (carbon monoxide, benzene, ammonia, ...), the local authorities have formed a committee consisting of specialists from the Health Department, Environment Agency, SGA Ciuc, Fire department and S.C.E.L.I.F. - S.A. Harghita, to analyze and solve the problem. As a result of the observations and discussions that took place, the specialists from the Environment Agency concluded that the land, due to the drainage system, was "excessively drained" and the peat, due to the dryness and the high temperatures in the air, self-ignited or caught fire from other causes.
