Sin embargo, aunque compartió con los ilustrados el propósito de superar el oscurantismo de los siglos precedentes, la obra de Jean-Jacques Rousseau presenta puntos divergentes, como su concepto de progreso, y en general más avanzados: sus ideas políticas y sociales preludiaron la Revolución francesa, su sensibilidad literaria se anticipó al romanticismo y, por los nuevos y fecundos conceptos que introdujo en el campo de la educación, se le considera el padre del pedagogía moderna.
