Niels Peter Rygaard es psicólogo y trabaja en Dinamarca desde hace 25 años con niños y niñas que padecen trastornos del apego graves. Sus investigaciones actuales estudian las adaptaciones de los programas educativos y de los tratamientos practicados por el personal encargado de la supervisión de los jóvenes en centros de acogida. Asimismo, sus esfuerzos se centran también en intentar que la reglamentación danesa de adopciones incluya un servicio de consultas tanto para las familias de acogida como para los niños y niñas adoptados. Participa además en un programa social destinado a aplicar en el sistema carcelario danés una orientación hacia el tratamiento y la ayuda terapéutica.
