DAVID FARRELL is Jean Monnet Professor of European Politics, University of Manchester. He is the author of numerous articles and chapters on elections, electoral systems and parties and of ‘Comparing Electoral Systems’ for which the present work is a much extended, revised and updated replacement. He is also co-author of ‘Party Discipline and Parliamentary Government’ and ‘Electoral Strategies and Political Marketing’. He is chair of the editorial board of’ Representation’, a co-editor of’ Party Politics’, and a member of the advisory council of the F. Clifton White Resource Center at the International Foundation for Electoral Systems, Washington DC.
