This book is the byproduct of an attempt by the authors to investigate the feasibility of using Switched Reluctance Motors (SRMs) in light Electric Vehicles like auto-rickshaws,scooters etc. Two separate cases are taken up and the machine is fully designed and the performance fully simulated for both. The design was finally frozen at nominal ratings of 1kW, 3-phase, 48 V, 3000 rpm. The motor has run been without any closed loop reference. The closed loop design of the drive has however been done and the steady state and transient performance analysed using MATLAB 6.5. Though the design was done from very elementary design principles, the electromagnetic performance of the magnetic design has been verified using ANSYS 7.1. The motor was locally fabricated from scratch in the workshops both in and around the University. The power converter was fabricated in the laboratory. The closed loop control implementation on digital platform and testing of the entire drive is under progress. The book should help curious experimenters who are interested in developing whole set-ups from scratch through analytical principles and then making them work.
