Scholarly Collection Catalog-Statuettes, Figure Groups, Reliefs, Vessels, MiscellaneaThe ivory collection of the Green Vault in Dresden is one of the world's richest and most significant in terms of art-history. For the first time, this sumptuously-illustrated catalog, the fruit of years of intensive scholarly research, presents the inventory of ivory statuettes, figure groups, reliefs and silver-framed vessels in synopsis. The earliest works are from the Byzantine period, the major part is from the 17th and 18th centuries, including works from famous ivory sculptors with close ties to Dresden, such as Jacob Zeller, Melchior Barthel, Balthasar Permoser, and Johann Christoph Ludwig Lücke. The chronological classification of the collection catalog is based on the inventory of the Dresden Art Chamber and the Green Vault.Style-critical analyses, comparisons, iconographic and monographic explanations on single works open up a rich variety of motifs, themes and models. At the same time, this volume makes visible the history of this collection, its development and dynastic traditions. It is an investigation that is breaking new ground.
