But it can be expressed in pictures. Elisabeth Neudörfl set off for the lively metropolis to capture the situation on the ground in photographs. She encountered a city deeply marked by protests and its struggle for democracy, the intransigence of power, and the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Neudörfl's images were taken, on the demonstration routes and at the universities. Signs of dystopia are everywhere: closed stores, streets without traffic, deserted metro stations. The graffiti alone reflect the conflicts and the changes in the city. With these images, viewers are in a position to form their picture of the catastrophe.

ELISABETH NEUDÖRFL (_1968) studied photography in Dortmund and Leipzig. She deals in her photographic oeuvre with the urban space as an expression of social, political, and historical discourses. She is a professor of documentary photography at the Folkwang Universität der Künste in Essen.

In ihrer fotografischen Arbeit beschäftigt sie sich mit dem städtischen Raum als Ausdruck sozialer, politischer und historischer Diskurse. Sie ist Professorin fu¨r Dokumentarfotografie an der Folkwang Universität der Ku¨nste in Essen.

Perlentaucher-Notiz zur TAZ-Rezension

Rezensentin Brigitte Werneburg verfolgt mit Elisabeth Neudörfls die Spuren der Demonstrationen in Hongkong. Dabei lassen die Bilder gerade durch ihre Schlichtheit viel "Raum für politische Reflexion". Zunächst scheint es, als sei in den leeren Straßen der Stadt mit ihren verriegelten Geschäften und roten Ampeln nichts von den Protesten übrig geblieben, außer der Angst, schreibt Werneburg. Dass diese nicht oder zumindest nicht nur die Angst der Bürger ist, sondern die der Staatsmacht, wird spätestens dann deutlich, wenn die vielfach überpinselten Graffiti und die verbarrikadierten Universitäten ins Bild geraten. Es ist eine ohrenbetäubende Stille, die die Straßen von Hongkong erfüllt. Der Fotografin ist es gelungen, diese Stille in ihren Bildern zu transportieren, so die nachdenkliche Rezensentin.
