It is part of the Bloomington Normal Metropolitan Statistical Area. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.2 square miles, all of it land. Ellsworth was laid out on 6 December 1871 by Jonathan H. Cheney and Almon Brigham Ives and Oliver Ellsworth, whom the town was named after.
