Christoffel attended the Jesuit Gymnasium and Friedrich-Wilhelms Gymnasium in Cologne and studied at the University of Berlin with Dirichlet, among others, where he received a doctorate in 1856 for a thesis on the motion of electricity in homogeous bodies.
