I blew out the candle, hoping in the dark I could finally ignore all things around me. The same chill crept down my arms however, this time they were followed by fingers. Two sets of pitch-black arms emerged from behind me and traced their talons along my skin and up to my neck. My throat constricted and I gasped out for breath only to have one set of claws close tightly around my throat. I reached out in vain to re-light the candle but the second pair of hands held my wrists back, digging into them until blood erupted from my skin. "So you're the world's light?" a voice hissed out from the void around me. "A light soon extinguished." I fought back as hard as I could, clawing into the assailant's hands, begging to be released. I jerked backward, bumping into my side table, and knocked the lamp to the ground. When it hit the floor the switch was bumped and the room was illuminated in a soft yellow glow. Air rushed into my lungs and I immediately jumped to my feet. I grabbed the fire stoker, leaned against the wall and threw my back into the corner of the room, ready to defend myself now. There was nothing though, just me. In this prequel to the book Genesis by Faith DeChambeau We follow Elysian as she wakes up in a foreign land with no idea where she is or how she got there.
