Martin F. Larréy, originally from California, trained with the Jesuits and was awarded a Ph.D. in history from the University of Santa Clara with a thesis on the success of the Spanish administration of the colonies in the New World. His career spanned fifty years in academia, primarily as Academic Vice President for institutions of higher learning throughout the United States. The present work, Embers Among the Ashes, narrates his experience with religious orders in the Church in the United States during the period from 1960 until 2000. With candid insight and acute clarity, Larréy traces the impact that religious orders have had on education in America: an impact that today not only survives, but also grows and flourishes.
