In the book, the author addresses the study of the category of children - mentally retarded schoolchildren with psychopathic behavior - which significantly complicates the educational process in special (correctional) educational institutions of VIII type due to the peculiarities of emotional-volitional and needs-motivating spheres of their personality. The author views empathy as a mechanism regulating the behavior of such children. Empathy is the basis for judgments about other people's actions and their own behavior; it is one of the most important sources of personal development; through empathy, a child develops a belief in the value of another person and positive behavior towards him/her; the ability to experience and share feelings and conditions of another person and to realize the emotional value of his/her actions. Experimental work identifies empathy in mentally retarded children with psychopathic behaviors and determines the directions, forms, and content of corrective and developmental work on its formation in children of this category.
