Ellen Saltonstall is an experienced yoga instructor with forty-five years of study, practice and teaching. She is known for her clarity, depth of knowledge, and enthusiasm for encouraging students of all levels to find freedom and joy through yoga.This body of experience, passion and knowledge is the subject of Ellen's newest book, "Empowered Aging: Everyday Yoga Practices for Bone Health, Strength and Balance." This book guides readers through her unique methodology for older students who are coming to yoga for help with the common conditions of aging.Her certifications include an Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher (E-RYT 500) designation from the Yoga Alliance and a yoga therapist certification (C-IYAT) with the International Association of Yoga Therapists. Ellen's training is in both Iyengar yoga and Anusara yoga, and she has studied with many master teachers over the years to whom she is grateful.Ellen holds a bachelor's degree from Cornell University and a master's degree from New York University. Her background includes studying and performing modern dance, working as a massage therapist, and appearing in two feature films: "Hair" (1978) and "Yogawoman" (2011).She has taught at Bard College, Cornell University, and Sarah Lawrence College, instructing students in human anatomy, yoga therapeutics, and Bodymind Ballwork, a method of bodywork she developed that uses rubber balls of various sizes and textures to massage and realign the body, refine proprioception, and facilitate tension release. She explains the technique in her book, "The Bodymind Ballwork Method" (North Atlantic Books, 2018).Ellen teaches regularly with the highly regarded online platform YogaUOnline, as well as in yoga venues both nationally and internationally, and her writings have appeared in "Yoga Journal," "Topics in Geriatric Rehabilitation," and The International Association of Yoga Therapists's "Journal of Yoga Therapy."Her other published books include "Yoga for Arthritis" (Norton, 2008) and "Yoga for Osteoporosis" (Norton, 2010), both coauthored with Dr. Loren Fishman, and "Anatomy and Yoga" (Abhyasa Press, 2016).Ellen is based in New York City, where she maintains her yoga studio and where she and her husband, Robert Kushner, raised three wonderful human beings.
