Encounter with the Elephants chronicles the twists, turns and encounters in the life of Mwalimu Gekone, who through hard work, community support and family generosity, rose from humble beginnings to reach the pinnacle of high school teaching. Caught in the politics of the profession and the struggle for excellence, he faces tough choices in frustrating circumstances. As a way out, he flees to the much sought-after West in search of safety and a better life. The American Dream! In this autobiographical novel, the teacher takes his audience through milima na mabonde (mountains/hills and valleys) in a most captivating manner, which he does candidly and in an incisive manner.
Autorenporträt
Samuel Wesley Nyanchoga, born and raised in Kisii, trained as a primary school teacher at Thogoto College, graduating in 1977. This followed successful primary and secondary schooling in Gusii, Nakuru and Nairobi in schools that included Amasege Primary School and Afraha, Nyanturago and Raval's secondary schools. Where he studied was occasioned by relocation and dictated by circumstances beyond his control. Raised by parents who treasured education, many relatives (especially his uncles) helped him along the journey in the true African spirit of ubuntu. Mr. Nyanchoga taught in various primary schools in Gusii and, by 1984, he could no longer resist the urge to go for further studies. This longing saw him travel to Nagpur University in India to study English Literature, Psychology and Economics. Back in Kenya, following university graduation, he rejoined teaching, albeit at the secondary school level. He worked variously as a classroom teacher, department head and principal in many secondary schools. As a teacher in one of the most intense political eras in Kenya, he found himself caught by the events of the political events of the time. These circumstances would later lead him to relocate to the USA in 2006.
