The Encyclopedia of Biophysics is envisioned both as an easily accessible source of information and as an introductory guide to the scientific literature. It includes entries describing both Techniques and Systems.
In the Techniques entries, each of the wide range of methods which fall under the heading of Biophysics are explained in detail, together with the value and the limitations of the information each provides. Techniques covered range from diffraction (X-ray, electron and neutron) through a wide range of spectroscopic methods (X-ray, optical, EPR, NMR) to imaging (from electron microscopy to live cell imaging and MRI), as well as computational and simulation approaches.
In the Systems entries, biophysical approaches to specific biological systems or problems - from protein and nucleic acid structure to membranes, ion channels and receptors - are described. These sections, which place emphasis on the integration of the different techniques, therefore provide an inroad into Biophysics from a biological more than from a technique-oriented physical/chemical perspective.
Thus the Encyclopedia is intended to provide a resource both for biophysicists interested in methods beyond those used in their immediate sub-discipline and for those readers who are approaching biophysics from either a physical or biological background.

Rezensionen
From the reviews:

"It offers both broad and deep coverage of what the authors do consider to be biophysics. ... Encyclopedia is a reference book to be always on hand for reliable answers to non-superficial questions. ... Reaction schemes are well illustrated and many structural models are supplied. ... Not only scientist with solid background in physics can use this book. Biologist may greatly profit from it, too." (Lubica Lacinová, General Physiology and Biophysics, Vol. 33 (2), 2014)

"A team of 35 editors under the leadership of Roberts has coordinated the contributions of 800 researchers and academics with expertise in areas related to the field. ... This encyclopedia provides an excellent resource to various areas, alphabetically ordered and categorized in sections titled 'Systems' and 'Techniques.' ... Included are very good illustrative diagrams and illustrations, exhaustive references, definitions, introductions, and summaries. ... Summing Up: Recommended. Graduate students through professionals/practitioners." (N. Sadanand, Choice, Vol. 50 (11), July, 2013)

"This is a comprehensive 5 Volume reference designed to be a handbook for biophysicists, biochemists, and structural biologists with an interest in the current literature and state of the art technology. It will be a good reference for many years to come. ... It can be used equally by students in training and academicians at the senior level. ... Encyclopedia of Biophysics by Gordon et al. is an outstanding text and reference for all those with interests in the subject." (Joseph J. Grenier, Amazon.com, July, 2013)
