Norm Ortner, a Southern California native, was born and raised in South Gate, a suburb of Los Angeles. Norm earned an Associate's Degree in Fire Science from East Los Angeles College, followed by a Bachelor's Degree in Fire Protection Administration from California State University, Los Angeles. His career in firefighting began in 1977 with the Lynwood Fire Department, where he rose to the rank of Fire Captain and served as the Reserve Firefighter Coordinator and union president (IAFF Local 3506). He also taught Fire Technology and Fire Officer classes at Mount San Antonio College and Santa Ana College for over two decades.
