Undoubtedly, the processes of teaching and learning a second language have changed over the years, from a traditional and passive pedagogy to a communicative and active one. Likewise, there are several factors that influence students in this process: personality, motivation, learning styles or strategies that they and teachers use. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to know the strategies for learning vocabulary at the pre-intermediate level of English used by students at the public university, since knowing them can strengthen their learning and provide teachers with the necessary tools to do so. Likewise, before initiating a strategy application plan, it is necessary to know the strategies that students already use in order to work from them (Monereo, 1994).
