This research is an exploration of reading
strategies aimed at maximizing achievement for
struggling readers.
Hispanic students were paired with non-Hispanic
students over a period of time. The peer-tutoring
experience resulted in students:
-passing the state test
-improving thinking and comprehension skills
-increasing in vocabulary
-improving in fluency
-becoming more confident in other subjects
-using reading strategies.
The students shared cultural experiences and had fun
learning together! At the end of the study, Tutor 3
states, "Reading together helped me to help the
little one learn more reading skills. It helped me
do a lot better on my reading and math tests.
I had a III in reading and math last year.
This year I made a III in reading and a IV in
math. I think it helped my tutee do better in her
reading skills. I think she had learned more reading
skills than her teacher taught her. She did not know
what the word "poultry" meant and I told her that
that was chicken." Reading is the foundation for
academic success, therefore, I recommend this
book to anyone who has an interest in helping any
child become a better reader!
