This series of volumes, aimed at improving exposure measurements, deals with a substantial proportion of substances known or suspected to cause human cancer. In order to minimize inter-laboratory variations and enhance the quality of study designs, this series provides (a) the multi-disciplinary background for future measurements (as a complement to the IARC Monographs on the Evaluation of Carcinogenic Risks to Humans) and (b) methods for sampling and analysis set out in ISO format. Volume 12 is a result of the relatively recent appreciation that air pollution is not restricted to the general atmosphere; most people nowadays spend the majority of their time inside buildings. Certain air pollutants are particularly important in the indoor environment, and this volume first reviews aspects of the problem such as sources and levels of pollutants, their effects, and the analytical approaches that can be used. It then presents 25 thoroughly tested methods for sampling indoor air and measuring pollutants such as radon, asbestos, volatile organic compounds (in particular formaldehyde) and tobacco-derived substances.
