This book stems from research developed on the conceptions and applications of Environmental Education (EE) in teaching practices. It is performed historical contextualization of the EE in Brazil, focusing on the struggle of environmental movements in the 1970s and the recognition of the EE as a public policy on the national scene from the 1990s, whose culmination was the promulgation of Law 9.795, on April 27, 1999, establishing the National Policy of Environmental Education (PNEA), implemented by the Ministry of Education, although this milestone did not mean the consolidation or assumption of its centrality in the curriculum, dealing only with their political recognition. In this sense, public policies for EE, implied a growing capacity of the State to respond to the demands in the articulated set of institutions with regulation and contractualism, strengthening the mechanisms of sustainable, critical and emancipatory management, incorporating the fundamental precepts of democracy and social justice.
