This book is the outcome of a research study undertaken at the doctoral level in Tamilnadu, India during 2006-2010. Managing solid waste, albeit local, is increasingly becoming a global environmental menace. Every discipline makes attempts to find solutions and environmental management holds a holistic approach by means of taking cue from different disciplines in solving the problem in a sustainable manner. The study brought forth the behavior of select households in managing solid waste, the cost incurred, and the institutional measures by the municipal corporation in collecting, transporting and dumping the waste in dumping yard. Health implications and the deplorable life style of conservancy workers were taken stock of. The U.N initiated Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) as a policy intervention is a blessing in disguise. Estimation made by this study reckoned that the Municipal Corporation of the study area could earn Rs. 2 crore annually by means of treating the waste in reducing methane emission through CDM participation. This book will be of immense use to researchers, policy makers and bureaucrats as well.
