Revision with unchanged content. This book monograph is a comprehensive study on environmental sanitation among the urban poor in developing countries. Using a case study of the Kibera slums in Nairobi, the study looks at Kibera s existing water and waste disposal infrastructure and considers how current conditions shape sanitary behaviors, pattern of diseases, health care and health seeking behavior. The book gives a painstaking picture of what life is like in the slums of Africa. Readers, especially those unfamiliar with the developing world, will find that some of the things they take for granted such as water, sanitary facilities, and hand washing are not even considered a basic right for the urban poor living in Africa. This book is a must read for all those working in public health, water, sanitation, behavior change, and social economic policy.
