Cánovas is the sixth and final novel in the fifth and final series of Episodios Nacionales by Benito Pérez Galdós. In 1847 Alfonso XII was proclaimed king and ended the Third Carlist War. In the novel, the hero Tito settles down with a modest though good natured wife as he suffers the onset of blindness (much like author). He becomes an unreliable narrator as his condition worsens, and the novel takes dark turns to end the prolific series. The final message is pessimistic, in that author implies there is no solution for the problems of political corruption and societal issues.
