Published 20 days after the assassination of its author--upon whose life it is based--this novel narrates the life, loves, and hopes of a young laborer in Catalonia during the first decades of the 20th century. Between 1914 and 1921 the number of laborers murdered in Barcelona by employers reached 523, and in 1923 General Primo de Rivera established a dictatorship and banned the National Federation of Labor, brutally repressing it. This is the setting for this tragic and revealing novel, in which death bears the mark of extreme right-wing gunmen, largely funded by Catalonian businesses. This book is a gripping read as well as an enlightening document on pre-Civil War Spain.
