Er absolvierte die Schifffahrtsschule Klaipeda und das Technische Institut für Fischereiindustrie und Wirtschaft in Kalinigrad mit der Spezialisierung "Betrieb von Schiffsantriebssystemen" und verbrachte 49 Jahre auf See als Schiffsmechaniker auf verschiedenen Schiffen - von Fischereifahrzeugen bis hin zu Gazellen und Containerschiffen.
