Recently increased focus has been on non-invasive diagnostic tests. Epidemic of AIDS and other blood borne diseases, bleeding disorders like hemophilia, invention of home based -noninvasive diagnostic tests and a demand that samples be collected with ease at the home or work place has accelerated research in this direction. Saliva is a complex fluid composed of a wide variety of organic and inorganic constituents that collectively act to maintain and modulate the oral environment. Impaired flow rate, altered composition of saliva, increased microbial counts associated with salivary dysfunction may increase the susceptibility to caries, periodontal destruction and various other mucosal lesions. The composition and secretion of saliva is influenced by local as well as many systemic, hormonal, neurochemical, autonomic, drugs and metabolic factors. One such factor is Diabetes Mellitus (DM).
