How this identity is being preserved depends on clear maintenance of ethnic boundary. Ethnic relations and boundary constructions in plural societies are not about strangers but adjacent and familiar "others". Key is here not cultural differences, but rather ascription: how people identify themselves and are identified by outsiders. To reach this objective it is necessary to strengthen the ethnic boundary. In the case shown in the following approach this leads through fighting for prestige goods, laying emphasis on a specific national cultural memory, preservation of the official status of the Ukrainian language and concentration on particular political aims. The feature of boundary creation indicates that the Ukrainians still do not feel safe next to Russians in their country. Für die in der Ukraine lebenden Russen ist die Unabhängigkeitserklärung dieses Landes ein schwerer Schlag gewesen, da einer zu Sowjetzeiten politisch und kulturell dominierenden Ethnizität auf diese Weise der Status einer privilegierten Gruppe entzogen wurde. Dennoch haben sich die Russen trotz ihres großen Anteils an der Gesamtbevölkerung in der Ukraine mit der Degradierung zu einer nationalen Minderheit abfinden können. Umso erstaunlicher ist es hingegen, dass es die Ukrainer sind, die sich langfristig bedroht fühlen. Diese Bedrohung hat im Zusammenbruch der Sowjetunion ihren Ursprung.
