Assam is a botanically rich state in North East India, which is situated in between 24o2'-27o6' N latitudes and 88o8'-96o E longitudes and covers an area of 78,438 sq. km. Assam is inhabited by a number of ethnic tribes belonging to the Indo-Mongoloid races. The people of this region have developed a rich ethnomedical tradition and have an abundance of medicinal plants known to the native people. In this manual, a total of one hundred ethnomedicinal plants of Assam have been incorporated along with family, local name, English name (if any), identifying characters, flowering and fruiting period, part used as well as therapeutic uses. Photograph of each of the plant has also been included to help the readers for correct identification. This volume is the outcome of author s field work conducted in between April 2010 to August 2011 in various places of Assam for the Major Research Project [F. No. 38-145/2009 (SR)] with financial assistance from University Grants Commission, New Delhi, India. It is hoped that the book will serve as the hand book for the students, teachers, researchers and NGOs.
