CHRIS COOK was a Visiting Research Fellow at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. Among his best-known books on modern Britain are Britain in the Depression (co-authored with John Stevenson), and A Short History of the Liberal Party, 1900-1997. Among his reference books are A Dictionary of Historical Terms and What Happened Where (co-authored with Diccon Bewes). JOHN PAXTON was editor of The Statesman's Year-Book from 1969 until 1990 and has written many books on European affairs, including A Dictionary of the European Communities, Encyclopaedia of Russian History and Companion to the French Revolution. He is also the compiler of The Statesman's Year-Book World Gazetteer.
