This book considers changes in regional policy-making in Turkey since the announcement of EU candidate status in 1999. It does this by looking specifically at changes in the structures and processes of regional policy-making; changes in participation in the policy-making process; and changes in the role and influence of key actors in the policy-making process. This study is also comparative across both time and space, comparing regional policy-making in Turkey before and after candidate status was announced and comparing developments in Turkey with those in a number of EU member/accession states. The book argues that the main catalyst of these changes in Turkish regional policy-making are the EU's institutional conditions for membership. However, the research claims that not only the EU requirements but also the non-EU forces in the form of global competitive pressures, the legislative changes at the national level and the efforts of national and regional NGOs have had a significant impact in the Turkish regional policy-making after the EU candidacy decision.
