In the age of digital information, social media platforms have become significant sources of news and information. However, the proliferation of misinformation poses serious challenges, particularly in Africa, where access to reliable information is critical for informed decision-making. This study examines the effectiveness of artificial intelligence (AI) in fact-checking social media content across the continent. By analyzing various AI-driven tools and methodologies employed in fact-checking, this study highlights their capabilities in identifying false information, assessing credibility, and enhancing public awareness. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data from AI performance metrics with qualitative insights from stakeholders in media, technology, and civil society. Preliminary findings indicate that while AI can significantly improve the speed and accuracy of fact-checking processes, challenges related to language diversity, cultural context, and technological infrastructure remain.
