Diabetes, a disease no longer associated with wealth, is on the rise worldwide, as reported in this 8th edition of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Diabetes Atlas 2017. The indicators of the current pandemic speak for themselves: nearly 500 million people are currently living with diabetes. Low- and middle-income countries bear almost 80% of the diabetes burden. Diabetes-related healthcare expenditures in adults (20-79 years) in 2017 were estimated at around $727 billion.
