Metabolism of glucose in liver of a diabetic patient involves variety of enzymes and selective alterations in hepatic enzyme flux result in acute and/or chronic complications. Biochemical transformations in the hepatic and pancreatic cells become object of investigation. Detail study of contemporary medicines, physiology and endocrinology made significant attempt in understanding hepatic glucose homeostasis as a proper diagnostic tools. It has been proposed that alloxan acts as a diabetogenic owing to its ability to destroy pancreatic -cells possibly due to the free radical generation mechanism. Antioxidants can protect experimental animals and human from oxidant mediated damages. Modern therapeutic agents have high rate of obsolescence. Plectranthus amboinicus (Lour) Spreng belongs to the family Lamiaceae commonly known as Indian borage contain flavonoids. Hence present study has been planned to evaluate the antihyperglycemic effects of Plectranthus amboinicus leaves extract andtheir possible effect on pancreatic tissue in albino rats. Our approach has been notjust to emphasize pharmacological activity of herbs, but to explore the cellular mechanism by which they act.
