Objective: To evaluate bond strength achieved by 3 commercially available self etching primers & to determine whether Xeno V & Clearfil Protect Bond self etching primers are suitable for orthodontic use.Method:The products tested were 1.Transbond Plus Self Etching Primer,3M 2.Xeno V,Dentsply,3.Clearfil Protect Bond,Japan.60 freshly extracted human maxillary 1st premolars were randomly divided into 3 groups of 20 teeth each.Group 1 (Transbond Plus Self Etching Primer & Transbond XT) group 2 (Xeno V and Transbond XT) group 3 (Clearfil Protect Bond & Transbond XT).Self etching primers were applied according to manufacturer s recommendations & metal brackets in all groups were bonded with Transbond XT adhesive.Brackets were cured for 20 sec with halogen curing lamp & stored for 24 hrs in distilled water.Brackets were debonded in shear on a universal testing machine. Results:One-way ANOVA showed a statistically significant difference.Group 3 had the highest shear bond strength. Conclusions: Acceptable bond strength was achieved by all the 3 groups tested. .Xeno V & Clearfil Protect Bond self-etching primers had sufficient shear bond strength to withstand normal orthodontic force.
