Emergency medical response systems are a critical component of any nation's health care system. In Every Second Counts, William Haseltine tells the story of India's pioneering Emergency Management and Research Institute, the world's largest emergency services provider. Launched in 2005, EMRI serves more than 700 million people across seventeen Indian states and territories. Dr. Haseltine explains how, despite limited resources, challenging infrastructure, and a population spread out over one of the largest countries, the government of India in partnership with EMRI created a world-class emergency system that over the past ten years has saved the lives of over two million people in India. Every Second Counts examines the reasons for EMRI's success-a modern medical education system, the use of cutting- edge information technology, and successful public- private collaboration-and shows how any government can provide its citizens with universal access to high- quality and affordable care.
