Infection with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) represents the largest contemporary human pandemic of infection, consistently lethal in the absence of treatment.HIV infection persists despite efforts to combat it, causing high morbidity and disastrous consequences for families. In addition to prevention, it is important to provide more effective drugs. In 1987, zidovudine was introduced as a monotherapy. This was followed by triple therapy between 1995 and 1996, with a combination of protease inhibitors (PIs) and non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs). In 2001, generic drugs were introduced. A decade later, the first preventive treatment, known as PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis), appeared in 2012. In recent years, WHO-recommended treatments for adults and adolescents have consisted of two types of nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), accompanied by an NNRTI or PI.
