This book covers the basic theory, practical details and advanced research of the implementation of evolutionary methods on physical substrates. Most of the examples are from electronic engineering applications, including transistor-level design and system-level implementation. The authors present an overview of the successes achieved, and the book will act as a point of reference for both academic and industrial researchers.

Autorenporträt
Dr. Martin A. Trefzer received his PhD from the University of Heidelberg where he worked on the evolution of transistor circuits. He is an Anniversary Research Lecturer at the Dept. of Electronics at the University of York working on using bio-inspired techniques to create scalable, fault-tolerant, adaptive and autonomous digital systems. His research interests include variability-aware analogue and digital hardware design, biologically motivated models of hardware design, and evolutionary computation. Prof. Andy M. Tyrrell has a PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and has been with the Dept. of Electronics at the University of York since 1990 where he is the Head of the Intelligent Systems Research Group. His main research interests are in the design of biologically inspired architectures, artificial immune systems, evolvable hardware, FPGA system design, fault-tolerant design, and real-time systems.
