The stories we tell are important because they can
change how we act in the world. Park interpreters
are professional storytellers and their stories
influence how visitors interact with the place they
are visiting. If done well, researchers agree that
interpretation, or "Heritage Appreciation," can
foster the development of ecological citizenship. In
the summer of 2003, a study was undertaken at
Dinosaur Provincial Park to explore the perceived
ability of existing programming to promote ecological
citizenship. Follwoing a series of in-depth
interviews with key stakeholders, it became apparent
that the promotion of ecolocial citizenship was
challenged by a lack of information conducive to
integrating natural and cultural history into park
naratives. It was determined that the incorporation
of environmental history narratives into park
programming could improve the ability of interpreitve
programming in Dinosaur Provincial Park to promote
ecological citizenship. Environmental history
narratives integrate nature and culture and explore
how people have influenced the land and how the land
has influenced people throughout time.
