For generations, concrete has been a common building material around the world. From the construction of high rise buildings to foundations, the mixture of water, cement, and sand is used due to their bonding property and the high strength. As time is changing new materials and techniques have been generated to improve the quality and strength of concrete. In this book we have discussed the "Bio-concrete", a concrete which heals itself. Also, this "Living Concrete" provides the concrete a better strength. This technique is highly desirable because the mineral precipitations induced as a result of microbial activities are pollution free and natural. The concrete behavior after adding the bacteria and the self-healing of cracks have also been discussed. The principle mechanism of bacterial concrete strengthening is that the bacteria themselves act as the catalyst and transform a precursor compound into a suitable filler material. The bacterial strain used in this experiment was Bacillus SONORENSIS and can lie for 200 years in concrete.
