Africa is puzzling. This is the reason why, in their discussion of political parties and other institutions, political scientists have often spoken of an African labyrinth. The articles and the essays included in this volume represent an effort to explore such labyrinth, to identify Africa's problems, its needs, its strengths and to appreciate its potential. In doing so, the volume discusses Africa's Think Tanks, research centers, universities and research outputs; it explores the fluctuations in the quality of governance across time and space; and it seeks to make sense of a continent that is in many ways paradoxical. It is a poor continent with incredibly affluent individuals and yet it is an incredibly rich continent which struggles to eradicate poverty in spite of all its wealth.
