Written in 2009, the contemporary studies Viola Spaces, by composer and violist Garth Knox, arise in response to the didactic gap in the teaching of extended techniques. In his performance note, the author suggests that a certain excerpt from the study n. 5 Rapid Repeat "[...] is a good preparation for Luciano Berio's Sequenza VI [...]". This statement motivated me to develop the present work. Through an ascending line that starts with a literature review about the concept, history and performance of extended techniques, passes through the description of contemporary Viola Spaces studies and culminates in Luciano Berio's Sequenza VI where its stylistic and technical-interpretative aspects are approached.
