Wealthy and powerful, reclusive and enigmatic, Matthew Kabal is a frightening polymath: an adventurer, mercenary and martial artist; a brilliant dabbler in art, physics and philosophy. But what else is he? What else? determined investigative reporter Rachel Harker wonders, even as she struggles with her feelings for Cadmann Warner, the old love who reminds her of Kabal at times--and Cadmann in turn returns, drawn into Kabal's machinations. But Kabal is targeted by a shadowy government agency, Rachel discovers. And though some see him as a trusted friend, or a discomfiting ally, to others he seems an enlightened mystic, or a superhuman immortal -- or a vampiric monster that must be destroyed at all costs. And in a violent gauntlet on the borders of international intrigue, mysticism and modern science, Kabal will not only reveal what he is--to those capable, perhaps, of understanding. He'll force them to examine what they themselves are.
