A multitude of factors has been examined impacting the clinical success of non-surgical endodontics. Conditions that are found to improve success rates of root canal treatment are the presence of vital pulp with an absence of pre-operative periapical lesion; when a periapical lesion was present, the smaller its size, the better the treatment prognosis, absence of pre-operative sinus tract, proper diagnostic aids, use of rubber dam isolation during treatment, achievement of patency at the canal terminus, an extension of canal cleaning as close as possible to the terminus, use of EDTA solution as a penultimate wash followed by a final rinse with NaOCl solution, use of intracanal medicaments between appointments, avoidance of technical errors during canal preparation, absence of inter-appointment flare-up (pain or swelling), satisfactory root canal filling, absence of root filling extrusion, root filling without voids, presence of a satisfactory coronal restoration, etc. The successof endodontic therapy, in terms of healing and functionality is very good for both teeth without and with apical periodontitis.
