What if James T. Kirk and Spock had a baby, left the Enterprise and moved to New Vulcan to live happily ever after?Fan fiction plots like this are a strong testament of fans' endless creativity. Not only do the authors invent their own storylines but they have developed a generic definition of content across fandoms according to the relationship present in the text. Classification is therefore profoundly related to gender and sexuality. Julia Elena Goldmann examines these generic structures and formulaic patterns comparatively in Star Trek and Supernatural fan fiction. She also focuses on the interplay of the concepts of gender, sexuality, relationships and depictions of family in these texts.

Rezensionen
»Die Arbeit [bietet] wertvolle Einblicke in die Art und Weise, wie Fan-Fiction - zumindest bis zu einem gewissen Grad - als kreative Plattform zum Ausdruck von Gesellschaftskritik genutzt wird. Sie leistet damit einen Beitrag zum breiteren akademischen Diskurs über Fankulturen und ihren Einfluss auf Medienerzählungen.« Claudia Töpper-Ko, mediendiskurs, 4 (2023) »This book will prove a valuable addition to fan studies and Goldmanns results - exhaustive as they are - will have paved the way for more literary-based analyses of fan texts.« Kerstin-Anja Münderlein, American Studies, 68/3 (2023) »Ihrer spannenden und wertvollen, im methodisch stringenten Vorgehen überzeugenden Analyse hat Goldmann eine umfangreiche Aufbereitung des bisherigen Forschungsstandes vorangestellt. Dadurch ist das Buch nicht voraussetzungsreich, sondern führt ganz grundlegend an die Thematik heran.« Vera Cuntz-Leng, MEDIENwissenschaft, 1 (2023)
