This thesis tries to assess the main attributes of federalism and the kinds of diversity that are politically relevant and necessitate political accommodation through the adoption of federalism. Furthermore, this thesis explores, in general, the major factors that contribute to the failure and success of federal systems. To appraise the application of the principles of federalism, institutions of federations and quasi-federations of some divided societies have been compared.
