This is a story of love, passion, and the Civil War. A present-day lesbian couple discovers a group of letters written by two young lesbian lovers during the Civil War Era. They came into possession of these letters through an unexpected inheritance. The two main characters are seventeen-year-old girls who fell in love with each other when social norms had no tolerance for same sex unions. The primary setting is in Pennsylvania during the Civil War era. Both lovers hate slavery and the looming Confederacy totally. Out of a sense of duty one of the girls (Rachel = Ray) enlists in the Union Army disguised as a man. A sizeable number of women did serve as men during that horrific war. Rachel (Ray) serves as a sharpshooter throughout that conflict. The heart of the story is two small groups of letters. Rachel's parents use letters to describe the political and economic factors that led to the Civil War. The remaining bulk of the letter collection is between Mary and her lover Rachel. Rachel's experiences during many battles are timeless. Mary in turn reflects on the confusion of civilian life during this conflict. The Civil War was the most tragic war in American history. Rachel Summerfield comes from a wealthy family and Mary comes from a bottom class dirt poor family. Mary is trying to survive an abusive father in a crushing household. Rachel has sworn to somehow extract Mary from this violent home. Both Rachel and Mary are intellectually gifted. Rachel's battle history is truly history as an enlisted officer would experience it. All the battles reflect a soldier's emotions and fear as many experienced it. Rachel's views on Union, slavery, death and the war itself are relevant to this very day. Rachel's struggle to hide her gender was constantly challenging. All these factors are compounded by their lesbian love. A situation that was far more difficult in their day than ours. You are the judge of this story. I hope you will enjoy this saga.
