John Henry Cardinal Newman (1801-1890) was an Anglican priest, poet and theologian and later a Catholic cardinal, who was an important and controversial figure in the religious history of England in the 19th century. Mary Katherine Tillman is Associate Professor in the Program of Liberal Studies at the University of Notre Dame. Her many publications on John Henry Newman include "'What, Then Does Dr. Newman Mean?': The Vision and the Views" in The Challenge and Promise of a Catholic University (Notre Dame Press, 1994).
