FGCS'88 was held with the objective of reporting on the current status and results of the research activities conducted by the Institute for New Generation Computer Technology (ICOT), Japan, in the intermediate stage of its FGCS projects, as well as encouraging researchers and representatives from business and the government to present papers, report research results and exchange opinions. The proceedings are published in three volumes. Volume 1 includes the plenary sessions and reports on ICOT research topics.
