Harry Houdini und der Spiritismus
Den späten Sir Arthur Conan Doyle verband über fünf lange Jahre hinweg eine enge Freundschaft mit dem Zauberer Harry Houdini. Zusammengebracht hatte sie das gemeinsame Interesse am Spiritismus – und darin vor allem die Hoffnung, mit den Toten in Verbindung treten zu können. Dabei war der Dichter derjenige, der fester glaubte. Zum Spiritisten geworden, nachdem der Sohn im Ersten Weltkrieg gefallen war, ließ Arthur Conan Doyle sich auch von den stärksten Beweisen nicht beirren. Harry Houdini wäre gerne seiner toten Mutter begegnet. Zusammen erforschten sie das gerade entstehende Feld der Parapsychologie, aber je mehr sie fanden und je mehr sie untersuchten, desto mehr wurde Harry Houdini, der Meister aller Tricks, zum professionellen Entlarver aller Spiritisten. Dieser Geschichte hat der junge italienische Zauberer Massimo Polidoro eine Doppelbiographie gewidmet, die unter dem Titel „Final Seance: The Strange Friendshipn between Houdini and Conan Doyle” nun auch auf englisch erschienen ist (Prometheus Books, New York). Die Freundschaft zerbrach, als Lady Doyle mit ihrer Mutter zu sprechen meinte und Harry Houdini das Ereignis nicht bezeugen wollte. Doch noch Jahre nach Houdinis Tod im Jahr 1926 war Conan Doyle überzeugt, dass der Zauberer tatsächlich hatte Mauern durchschreiten können.
